I’m sure you’ve seen the Firefox plugin for VideoDownloader (which lets you save movies from Youtube, Google Video, or 40+ other video aggregator sites for offline viewing.)

But what about Safari? Here’s a bookmarklet that will let you save vids with the push of a button. Just drag this link to your bookmark bar:

Get Vid

…then when you see a vid you like, punch the button. This seems to work best from the aggregator site directly (eg. Youtube or Google Video) rather than from linked blogs (eg. tvinjapan.)

Another tip (from Eric): Play FLV’s with the latest nightly build of VLC. Conversion still seems a bit shaky though; try SUPER for that (Windows only).

If the medium is the message, the message behind the crappy FLV format seems to be “We’re broadcasters, not webmasters! We’re not we’re not we’re not! It’s called streaming! Download is dead! And never mind the ads.” Here’s a hint: If you don’t make it easy and fun for people to use your stuff the way they want to, they will use somebody else’s stuff.

Thanks, Javimoya for providing this invaluable stop-gap hack… Enjoy the bookmarklet!

    Hi.

Thank you for this great tip.
I was using Firefox almost only for that.
Now I can download straight from Safari!

    Now my 2 cents:
I use MPEG Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com/ ) to convert from FLV to other formats.
It’s a great (and free) video conversion app for the Mac.

    Take care.

The link to Get Vid doesn’t work anymore…

How does this handle pages that have several flash video items on it at the same time? I’ve come across many sites (particularly TV show websites and Japanese media sites where I would like to grab the video from only one of the several flash “panels”.)

It’s a short time that if I try to use “Videodownloader” with “Yuoutube” it doesn’t work. It advise me about an error (?). It’s the same also using “Firefox”. Thank you.
