Kids Toy Used As Low Cost Bomb Detector
Published by maus December 7th, 2006 in HacksWe’ve all read about and seen pictures of how U.S. soldiers in Iraq have outfitted their trucks with customized armor in order to handle powerful explosive IED devices. It’s all in an effort to pick up the slack where government issued weapons and gear fail them. Soldiers are writing home for care packages and asking for some over-the-counter everyday items to solve tough problems.
Condoms and rubber bands can be used to help keep sand out of gun barrels. Custom wool and cotton knitted caps can help cool and wick away sweat that builds up under unbreathable helmets. Beanie Babies, in place of candies or plastic toys, can be passed on to local children to help build community goodwill towards U.S. forces.
An article published in today’s Seattle Times reports how U.S. soldiers are asking for yet another children’s toy: aerosol Silly String in a can.
Apparently, when sprayed into a room before entry the super-light string can detect near invisible trip wires without triggering them. The long strands of florescent string settle across the trip wires (appearing to hover in mid-air), alerting the soldiers to potential danger.
Innovative.

A friend forwarded me a link to this image of a service man pwn3d by Silly String gone terribly wrong. Or, perhaps this is terribly right? Heh.
